How to search inside your downloaded videos

Short answer

On an Apple Silicon Mac, let Fetchii create subtitles for your downloads, then type what you remember into the search field in Fetchii's toolbar (⌘F). Matches appear under Said in videos even if you use different words or another language, and clicking the timecode jumps there.

Step by step

  1. Let Fetchii create subtitles

Search works on the subtitles Fetchii creates. Turn on Generate subtitles automatically on this Mac in Fetchii → Settings → Intelligence → Subtitles. For videos you downloaded earlier, right-click one and choose Generate subtitles, or select several (⌘-click) and click Generate subtitles in the bar at the bottom of the window.

  2. Check that search is on

Search by meaning is on by default in Settings → Intelligence → Search. The first time, Fetchii downloads its search model. The status shows Indexing… 3 of 10 while it works and All 10 videos ready when it's done.

  3. Describe what you're looking for

Click the search field in the toolbar, or press ⌘F (Edit → Search Downloads), and type. You don't need the exact words: describe the moment, for example “the part about saving for retirement”.

  4. Jump to the moment

Results are grouped into Titles and Said in videos. Each quote shows a timecode, and Matched by meaning marks one that doesn't contain your exact words. Click the timecode to play the video from there in Fetchii. For MKV and WebM files, Fetchii opens your default player and copies the timecode for you.

Please note: Search works on your own library; keep it to videos you have the right to save.

More you can do

Search across languages

Search in English and find a moment in a Chinese or Spanish video. The search model understands many languages.

Rebuild the index

If results look stale, use Rebuild Index in Settings → Intelligence → Search. Clear Index removes it.

Summaries and tidy names

The same on-device models can summarize each video and suggest clean file names. See how to transcribe a video.

Does search need the internet?
Only to download the search model once. Indexing and searching run on your Mac.
Does it work on Intel Macs?
