Summaries & Smart Naming
Two small features that make a big library manageable: summaries tell you what a video is about before you press play, and smart naming turns cryptic filenames like stream_final_v2_1080p_0847.mp4 into titles a human would write. Both run on the shared local Language model — nothing leaves your Mac.
Prerequisites
Both features need:
- The Language model (Settings → Intelligence → On-Device Models — Standard, 2.3 GB, is the default size). If it isn't downloaded yet, Fetchii fetches it the first time it's needed.
- A transcript for the video — subtitles Fetchii generated (see Generating Subtitles)
- An Apple Silicon Mac, like all Intelligence features
Summaries
Turn on Summaries in Settings → Intelligence → Summaries & Names. Then, on any completed download with a transcript:
- Click the row's AI chip (it reads Subtitles) to open its Intelligence popover.
- Click Summarize.
- A short, readable recap appears right in the popover — with a Copy summary button beside the title.
With the inspector open (⌘I), the same summary appears in its Summary section for the selected download.
Prefer not to click at all? Turn on Summarize each new video automatically (just below Summaries) and every new transcript gets summarized as soon as it's ready. Summary language sets the language summaries are written in — by default, the app's language.
Long content works too: for lengthy transcripts (multi-hour lectures, podcasts), Fetchii summarizes in sections and merges the results, so the end of a three-hour video is represented just as well as the beginning. Long jobs show progress and can run while you keep using the app.
Want a different take? Regenerate summary lives in the popover's … menu.
Note: Turning Summaries off also hides the Summarize button on each video — useful if you want a minimal popover.
Smart Naming
Right-click any download that has a transcript or a summary and choose Smart Rename. A sheet shows:
- Current name — what the file is called now
- Suggested name — a clean, human-readable title drawn from the video's actual content, which you can edit (or ask for another with Suggest Another Name)
Click Rename to accept.
Turn on Suggest tidy file names in the same settings group, and Fetchii prepares a suggestion by itself when a new transcript is ready and the title is long or messy. It appears as a small card in the video's popover, with its own Rename button.
Either way, one deliberate rule applies: Fetchii never renames anything on its own. No suggestion is applied without your explicit click, and renaming updates the file, its entry in your library, and its sidecar files (like subtitles) together.
How They Share One Model
Summaries, naming, and on-device translation all run on a single loaded copy of the Language model. That keeps memory use flat — enabling all three doesn't cost three models' worth of RAM. Jobs queue politely: if a summary is being written when you ask for a rename suggestion, the rename simply runs next.
The first job after launching Fetchii takes a few extra seconds while the model warms up.
Troubleshooting
- The Summarize button is missing — the Summaries toggle is off, or the video has no transcript yet.
- "The Language model isn't downloaded yet" hint in Settings — the toggle is on but the model isn't installed; it downloads the first time it's needed, or click Download Now.
- A summary reads oddly — regenerate it; short or music-heavy transcripts give the model little to work with.
- No naming card in the popover — Fetchii only offers suggestions on its own when the current name is long or messy; tidy names are left alone. You can still use Smart Rename from the right-click menu.
